PBA Objectives
Based on the Program's research lines, the PBA's mission is to ensure the training of high-quality human resources, through teaching, research and extension, to contribute to the development of innovative biotechnological products and processes and intellectual, technological and social advances. Therefore, the central objectives of the course are:
• To train qualified human resources capable of generating and disseminating scientific and technological knowledge focused on Biotechnology, with an integrated vision of socio-environmental and economic perspectives;
• To prepare multidisciplinary professionals to work in biotechnological research and in the development of experiments or manufacturing of products, covering areas of cellular and molecular biology, genetics, mutagenesis, bioinformatics, molecular diagnostics in health, agriculture and the environment;
• To promote the qualification of professionals in the use of organisms for the production of compounds and processes of industrial interest with the rational use of the environment and its conservation;
• To encourage the development of technologies for the preservation, conservation, maintenance, monitoring and treatment of the environment. Always considering respect for the characteristics inherent to living beings and the environment, preserving the health of organisms, and the quality, safety and maintenance of life, following the precepts of ethics and law.
PBA History
The emergence of the Biotechnology area became the basis for a new path to be followed by DBC faculty members, committed to this new journey. This path was long, beginning in 2003, and over the years it included Specialization, Undergraduate, Master's and Doctorate courses in the area. These courses were led by the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics, which on May 7, 2012 (Resolution 005/2012-COU) was renamed the Department of Biotechnology, Genetics and Cell Biology (DBC), demonstrating the direction of this department towards the work area in Biotechnology.
This biotechnological objective was initially based on the “dreams” and ideals of Prof. Dr. João Alencar Pamphile, which enchanted and involved a large number of DBC faculty members. The members of the Committee, formed by Professors João Alencar Pamphile, Veronica Elisa Pimenta Vicentini, Ana Luiza de Brito Portela Castro, Claudete Aparecida Mangolim and Maria Claudia Colla Ruvolo-Takasusuki, fought with great determination and determination to bring the Project to fruition, which grew over time and in terms of achievements. The presence of two important figures was essential for the success of this journey and in following this path: Prof. Dr. João Lucio de Azevedo, advisor to Prof. Pamphile and a renowned researcher in this area, and Prof. Dr. Décio Sperandio, Rector of UEM, who brought in the support of the administration itself and the State Secretariat for Science, Technology and Higher Education of Paraná (SETI). Thus, with everyone's help and commitment, barriers were overcome and objectives and ideals were achieved.
In order to fulfill these objectives, we briefly report the History of Biotechnology, the courses offered in this area and the periods, as well as the number of classes until 2024, at DBC/UEM:
• 2004: Specialization in Biotechnology with Emphasis on Environment and Health;
