Infrastructure

Abstract: The PBA is housed in the Department of Biotechnology, Genetics and Cell Biology (DBC), located in block H67 of the UEM main campus. It has a technical secretariat – coordinated by Esp. Edenir Ferreira Policiano Antonio – and a complete infrastructure for its activities. The PBA also has the infrastructure of teaching and research laboratories in blocks H-67 and G-80, as described below:

• TEACHING LABORATORIES:

01) Teacing in Cellular Biology (DBC): block H67/room 01, with 85 m2. Activity developed: Undergraduate and graduate classes. Equipment: 22 binocular light microscopes, 1 microscope with attached viewing system, 1 29” TV, 1 multimedia projector. Laboratory Technician and Assistant.

02) Genetics Teaching (DBC): block H67/room 05, with 87 m2. Activity developed: Undergraduate and graduate classes. Equipment: 20 stereoscopic microscopes, 1 20” TV, 1 multimedia projector.

03) Biotechnology Laboratory I: block G80/room 210. Activity developed: Theoretical-practical classes in Biotechnology and Cell Biology. Equipment: 1 multimedia system, 20 microscopes, 1 thermocycler, pH meter and microwave. Laboratory Technician.

• RESEARCH LABORATORIES I:
Note.: PBA and DBC teachers, located in Block H67, with the support of three technicians and five laboratory assistants.

01) “João Alencar Pamphile” Microbial Biotechnology Laboratories (LBIOMIC) (coord. Julio Cesar Polonio). Activity: Research in Biological Control, Biodiversity and Bioprospecting of microorganisms. Equipment: biological incubators, centrifuge, water baths, shakers (refrigerated tabletop orbital shaker), laminar flow, magnetic stirrers, class II biosafety cabinets, water distiller, -20°C freezer, lyophilizer, -86°C ultra-freezer, PCR cabinet, thermocyclers, Quantus Fluorimeter, electrophoresis systems, gel photodocumentation system, refrigerated centrifuge for tubes and microplates, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, rotary evaporation system, water ultrapurifier, ‘VacuumManifold’ system for SPE, drying oven and for growing plants in pots.

02) Laboratory of Biological Control and Bioprospecting of Insects (LACONBIO) (coordinator: Helio Conte). Activity: Research in Biological Control and bioprospecting of insects of agricultural, public health and forensic interest. Equipment: Fume hood, histological ovens, digital scales, stove, benchtop water distillers, incubators, refrigerator, microwave, ultrasound tank, cell counter, hot plate, vortex, magnetic stirrer, portable pH meters, titration set, blender, processor, water filter, plastic packaging sealer.

03) Research Support Laboratory I. Activity: Preparation of diets and solutions in general. Equipment: heater, air conditioner, photoperiod, thermostat, homogenizing micro-grinder, stove, drying oven.
04) Laboratory of Mutagenesis and Environmental Monitoring (LMMA) (coord. Veronica Elisa Pimenta Vicentini). Activity: Research in mutagenesis and environmental biomonitoring for the identification of the genotoxic and antigenotoxic potential of chemical, biological and physical agents, in cell cultures, aquatic organisms, plants, rodents and human monitoring. Equipment: Refrigerator, Light microscopes, Tube centrifuge, Water bath, Automatic micropipette kit, Drying oven, Distilled water system, Fume hood.

05) Toxicogenetics Laboratory (LTOX) (coord. Veronica Elisa Pimenta Vicentini). Activity: Investigation of the toxicogenetic activity of natural compounds, bioprospected compounds, isolated and environmental, in primary and tumor cell cultures. Equipment: Semi-analytical balance, pH meter, Magnetic stirrer, Microwave, Eppendorf and tube centrifuge, Microplate reader, Light microscope with camera, Refrigerators, Level II biosafety cabinet, Cryogenic cylinder, CO2 cylinders, CO2 ovens, Laminar flow chambers, BOD and bacteriological oven, Inverted microscope, Analytical balance, Automatic micropipette kits, Cell counters (Neubauer chamber), Filtration system, Electrophoresis systems.

06) Environmental Mutagenesis Experimentation Bioterium (BEMA) (coord. Veronica Elisa Pimenta Vicentini). Activity: Genotoxicological and antigenotoxicological analysis induced by exposure to compounds of interest consumed by the population, isolated and bioprospected, in Rattus norvegicus Wistar lineage. Equipment: Scale, Polypropylene boxes, Glass drinkers, Photoperiod control system, Temperature and exhaust control system.

07) Laboratory of Mutagenesis in Aquatic Organisms (LMOA) (coord. Veronica Elisa Pimenta Vicentini). Activity: Studies in the area of ​​mutagenesis and environmental monitoring, focusing on the toxicogenetic evaluation of environmental pollutants, decontamination products obtained by chemical, physical treatments and bioremediation, in zebrafish. Equipment: Aquariums, Aerators, Thermostats, System for photoperiod control, for temperature and exhaust control.

08) Laboratory of Cytogenetics and Mutagenesis of Fish (coordinator: Ana Luiza de Brito Portela Castro). Activity: Research in Cytogenetics, Mutagenesis and Environmental Monitoring. Equipment: water baths, Dubnoff baths, centrifuges, microcentrifuges, sterilization and drying ovens, binocular optical microscopes, image capture microscope, photomicroscope with image capture system and fluorescence system, FISH hybridizer, analytical balance, thermocycler, CO2 oven, electrophoresis systems, distiller, transilluminator, refrigerators, vertical freezer.

09) Fish Maintenance and Research Bioterium
(coord. Ana Luiza de Brito Portela Castro). Activity: Maintenance and experimentation with fish. Equipment: aquariums, continuous aeration system, refrigerator, analytical balance, centrifuge.

10) Plant Biotechnology Laboratory (coord. Maria de Fátima Pires da Silva Machado). Activity: Research in Biodiversity, Biocatalysis and Biotransformation. Equipment: Water distiller, freezer, horizontal electrophoresis systems, thermocyclers, refrigerated and non-refrigerated centrifuges and BOD, transilluminator, drying oven, water baths, electrophoresis sources, vertical electrophoresis systems, water purification system.

11) Plant culture chamber (coord. Maria de Fátima Pires da Silva Machado). Activity: Cultivation of plant cells and tissues. Equipment: laminar flow hood and shelves for plant culture bottles.

12) Research Support Laboratory II. Activity: Cleaning and disinfection of materials. Equipment: fume hood, autoclaves, drying oven.

13) Animal Biotechnology Laboratory (coordinator: Maria Cláudia Colla Ruvolo-Takasusuki). Activity: Research in Biodiversity, Biocatalysis and Biotransformation. Equipment: greenhouses, ice machines, drying and culture greenhouses, centrifuges, electrophoresis systems, freezers. The group's research also has access to the UEM experimental farm, more specifically to the beekeeping and meliponiculturist sector.

14) Research Support Laboratory III. Activity: Room for RNA isolation and manipulation.

15) Research Support Laboratory IV: Multiuser Laboratory. Activity: qRT-PCR reaction, maintenance of materials, quantification of DNA, RNA and proteins. Equipment: -80ºC Freezer, DNA Sequencer, Real Time PCR, biolistics system, Nanodrop and Picodrop.

16) Microscopy Laboratory. Activity: Analysis of material stained with fluorochromes. Equipment: Fluorescence microscope.

17) Radioisotope Laboratory (coord. Veronica Elisa Pimenta Vicentini). Activity: Investigation of the action of radioisotopes and the radioprotective effect of natural compounds/extracts, bioprospected and isolated, in different experimental models. Equipment: Hybridization oven, BOD and drying ovens, exhaust hood, refrigerator, Geiger Muller counter.

18) Bioinformatics Laboratory – Biotechnology I, Block G80, room 214. Activity: Theoretical classes of PBA and bioinformatics analyses. Equipment: 07 complete computers connected to the internet and multimedia system.

19) Molecular Genetics Laboratory – Block G80, room 210 (coordinator: Alessandra Valéria de Oliveira). Activity: Research in the areas of Biodiversity, Biocatalysis and Biotransformation, conducting molecular studies in natural populations. Equipment: Microcentrifuge, electrophoresis system, water bath, thermocycler, -20°C freezer, refrigerator, oven, UV transilluminator, semi-analytical balance, vortex.

20) Laboratories under the responsibility of Prof. Dr. Rosangela Bergamasco (DEQ-UEM) – Laboratory of Management, Control and Environmental Preservation, three laboratories in the Chemical Engineering Block. Equipment: Agitator/grinder, magnetic stirrer with and without heating, for BOD, mechanical, rotary for non-volatiles, orbital shaker, total organic carbon analyzer, autoclave, thermostatic and ultrasonic bath, centrifuges, vacuum and peristaltic pumps, laminar flow, hot plate, sample collector, conductivity meter, pH controller, gas chromatograph, water and nitrogen distiller, oven, dissolved oxygen meter, respirometric meter, membrane module, UV module, turbidimeter, bench mill, UV/VIS spectrophotometers, Hach reactors (COD analysis), HPLC, optical microscope, total organic carbon analyzer, zeta potential.
21) Laboratories under the responsibility of Prof. Dr. Eduardo Cesar Meurer (UFPR – Jandaia do Sul). Equipment: Triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer coupled to 1 UPLC and UV/Vis, fume hoods, tube centrifuges, nitrogen distiller, vertical and horizontal freezers, stainless steel tanks with mixer, polypropylene and carbon steel tanks, bag filter, jacketed glass fermentation reactor with mixer and temperature controller with liquid bath, ultrasound baths.
22) Embrapa Soja Research Laboratories linked to Dr. Alexandre Nepomuceno, in the research line: Biodiversity, Biocatalysis and Biotransformation – Agrometeorology Laboratory. Equipment: Heliograph, evaporimeter, thermohygrograph, soil moisture meter by reflectometry, pyranometer, psychrometer, portable spectroradiometer, plant canopy analyzer, portable digital anemometer, rain gauge, digital thermometer, GPS, photosynthetically active radiation measuring bar, soil moisture sensor, meteorological station with sensors for determining air temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, global solar radiation, soil temperature, wind speed and direction, atmospheric pressure.
23) Embrapa Soja Research Laboratories linked to Dr. Alexandre Nepomuceno – Ecophysiology Laboratory. Equipment: NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) meter – GreenSeeker, leaf area meter – Li-3100, chlorophyll meter (SPAD), leaf water potential meter – Psypro and soil water potential meter – WP4C, portable photosynthesis devices (IRGA) – Lc-pro and (IRGA) – Li-6400, scales, greenhouse TE-394/1, infrared thermometer Raynger3i LRSCL2 and RAYRPM5CFTR, thermostated bath TE-184, dissolved oxygen meter – oximeter DO-5519.
24) Embrapa Soja Research Laboratories linked to Dr. Alexandre Nepomuceno – Plant Biotechnology Laboratory. Equipment: Thermocyclers, real-time PCRs, sequencer, Nanodrop spectrophotometers, vertical, horizontal and capillary electrophoresis systems, photodocumentation system with UV transilluminator, automatic pipetting platform, microtube, plate and vacuum centrifuges, seesaw, magnetic and vortex shakers, stereoscopic microscopes, biobalistics equipment, drying oven, refrigerated incubators with shaking and BOD, ultrasound baths and water baths, laminar flow hoods, autoclaves, ultrafreezers, freezers, ice machine, water purification system by reverse osmosis.
25) Laboratories under the responsibility of Prof. Dr. Luiz Fernando Cótica (DFI-UEM). Equipment: Infrastructure for the synthesis of materials by chemical routes; cryogenic system for magnetic measurements, equipped with an optical window for spectroscopy; vacuum system with diffusion pump, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), tubular and muffle furnaces, X-ray diffractometer, equipment for electrical characterizations (conductivity, ferroelectricity, dielectric properties, etc.).

• UEM'S COUNTERPART, AIMED AT DEVELOPING EXCELLENT EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND EXTENSION IN PR:

1) Comcap/UEM - UEM has a Research Support Laboratory Center, with a total area of ​​842.63 m², linked to the Pro-Rectory of Research and Graduate Studies (PPG), with a multi-user nature, consisting of 9 centers that include: 1. Agriculture and agribusiness; 2. Advanced materials analysis; 3. Molecular, structural and functional biology; 4. Documentation; 5. Studies on global changes; 6. Microscopy; 7. Natural products; 8. Health technology; and 9. Bioenergy (created in 2024 on the Umuarama campus). The entire Comcap equipment structure is available to the PPGs.

2) BIT/UEM - Central Bioterium linked to PPG and aims to produce and supply laboratory animals, with genetic and sanitary quality to meet activities related to teaching, research and extension.

3) NPD/UEM - The Data Processing Center supports Postgraduate Programs in teaching, research and academic collaboration.
