• DISCIPLINE INTEGRATING BIOTECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY: PRACTICAL ACTIONS
(Development period: 1/2018 and 1/2019)
Contextualization: The dissemination of academic knowledge in society is a fundamental step in the formation of critical and well-informed citizens and one of the goals of the national plan for technological development. Biotechnology is an emerging area in society, however, although emerging, biotechnology is still a relatively new concept and far from the general understanding of the population. One way to try to reduce this gap between biotechnology - its tools and applications - and society is to make this topic increasingly present in schools, so that students act as multipliers of knowledge in their home environment.
Objective: To disseminate Biotechnology as a multidisciplinary science, mainly for students and teachers of basic education in the area of Science and Biology, through the integration of teaching, research and extension, thus ensuring an inclusive and equitable quality education, and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Generation of Products and Processes:: The discipline has already generated several products (publications and teaching materials) and processes (short courses and workshops). Below is a detailed description of the products and processes generated:

• Teaching material - The proposed experimental activity is a simulation of an immunochromatographic test for the qualitative determination of anti-HIV antibodies (rapid test) for the diagnosis of AIDS.
• Teaching material - Infographic designed to address how the immune response to the HIV virus in our body is used to diagnose AIDS through the rapid HIV test.
• Project - Intermedia-oil - Technology and Social and Environmental Responsibility: a vision of the future. The project aimed to integrate society and the environment through uberized technology. It is an application with a social and environmental bias, whose objective is to put theory into practice regarding social environmental awareness. The oil collected was used to carry out a school project at the Colégio de Aplicação Pedagógica – CAP – UEM in Maringá – PR.
• Workshop - Environmental Biotechnology at School - Workshop held at the Colégio de Aplicação Pedagógica – CAP – UEM de Maringá – PR with a focus on recycling vegetable oil used in the manufacture of household cleaning products (soap, handmade soap and citronella candle). Biofuel analysis experiments were also carried out in addition to raising environmental awareness regarding the improper disposal of used oil.
• Extension Course - Forensic Genetics Extension course held during the scientific week of the Maringá State Education Institute, which aims to assist in the search for information to solve criminal and non-criminal cases, through the use of molecular biology techniques (DNA).
• Extension Course and Teaching Material - Biotechnology applied to Criminal Investigation. Extension course held during the scientific week of the Maringá State Education Institute, whose objective was to bring students some knowledge of criminal investigation, forensic entomology, and how biotechnology is linked and is of extreme importance for this and several other areas. Some teaching materials were created to develop the course, such as a folder and a case study.

Background: The Dr Genetica Project began in 2016 and continues to this day (2025). The project aims to offer reliable and easy-to-understand online information about genetic tests and content related to genetics or health, through our social networks, website and the Dr Genetica News newspaper.
