The Brazilian manufacturing industry has been reducing its production in recent years. Besides the loss of foreign markets, the Brazilian industry is losing domestic market share. The objective of this work is to study the process of industrialization and Brazilian deindustrialization occurred, respectively, between 1947 and 1987, and 1987 and 2015. To address the issue, there will be used three tests: 1) share of the manufacturing industry in the composition of GDP; 2) growth rate of the manufacturing industry compared to the GDP growth rate; 3) share of manufactures in the composition of exports. By data analyses, it has concluded that industrialization is a fact in Brazil since the mid-1940s to the late 1980. The manufacturing industry increased from 25.97% of GDP to 47, 97%. The average annual rate of growth of the industry was 0.75% higher than the rate of GDP from 1947 to 1987. The deindustrialization, in turn, presented its first signals from the second half of the 1980s, 1987 was a landmark of the beginning. The share of the manufacturing sector decreased from 15.3% to 11.4% from 2000 to 2015, while its growth rate was 1.62% lower than the GDP. However, there are restrictions concerning the data used and the nature of this phenomenon. The debate deindustrialization needs greater attention.
